Ubiquiti U7 Long-Range Wi-Fi 7 Access Point

The Ubiquiti U7 Long-Range, model U7-LR, is designed for installations prioritizing coverage across larger indoor spaces. It suits offices, homes, educational facilities, and hospitality premises with a carefully planned AP layout.

Its 3 × 3 5GHz radio and 2 × 2 2.4GHz radio provide 5 spatial streams. A 2.5GbE uplink connects the AP to the wired network.

Features and Benefits

  • Coverage-focused design: Useful when positioning APs to serve larger open areas.
  • Multigigabit wired connection: Provides more backhaul capacity than a Gigabit interface.
  • Single-cable power and data: Simplifies installation at ceiling or wall positions.
  • Centralized control: Maintain consistent settings across a UniFi deployment.

How to Set It Up

  1. Survey the building. Identify thick walls, floors, metal structures, and areas with weak service.
  2. Select the AP position. Prefer a clear path to users rather than relying on transmission through several heavy walls.
  3. Prepare compatible PoE power.
  4. Test the Ethernet path. Confirm the upstream port and cable support the intended speed.
  5. Mount and adopt the AP.
  6. Update firmware and management software.
  7. Create wireless networks. Configure security, passwords, and guest access.
  8. Plan channels and transmit power. Coordinate with neighboring APs.
  9. Test coverage boundaries. Use ordinary phones and laptops at the intended user positions.
  10. Adjust the design if necessary. Add APs where measured performance shows a coverage gap.

Advantages

  • Coverage-focused design.
  • 3 × 3 5GHz radio.
  • 2.5GbE uplink.
  • Modest stated maximum power consumption.

Disadvantages

  • No 6GHz radio.
  • A separate gateway is required.
  • Long-range positioning cannot overcome every structural obstruction.

FAQs

Does long-range mean 1 AP can cover every floor?
No. Building materials and client transmit capability remain important.

Why is a phone slow despite showing a signal?
Check interference, signal quality, congestion, and the phone’s return connection.

Can it use a Gigabit upstream connection?
A compatible connection may operate at Gigabit, but the faster backhaul capacity will not be available.
